Potluck prasad following the Kirtan 9 -10 pm
Kirtan is a joyous form of devotional, call-and-response chanting that originated in India centuries ago. At kirtan, we sing the Names of the Divine from many traditions. The repetition of these names brings us into a state of collective bliss. Scientists have proven that certain sounds can calm the nervous system, realign the chakras, and remove blockages-both physical and emotional. And singing is a great way to beat the winter blues!
Kirtan is a wonderful practice for those who feel they ‘cannot meditate.’ The effect of chanting is immediate-the mind is stilled, the heart is opened, and the spirit is set free. The peaceful drones of the tambour, sitar and other Indian instruments–combined with the rhythmic sounds of the tablas (Indian drums)–also contribute to the bliss of kirtan, by inducing deep meditative states. . The wonderful drones of the tambour, sitar and other Indian instruments; plus also add to the bliss of kirtan, by inducing deep meditative states.

SoulSong: Listen, Breathe and Sing
SoulSong is devoted to tapping into the everflowing river of song that lives within each of us. Singing doesn’t have to be about performing and “getting it right”. Rediscover how singing can be about play, spontaneous creation, self-discovery and the experience of spirit at work. With toning, chanting, and spirit singing in a safe, supportive circle, connect with the instrument that is your voice, the song that is your soul and the spirit that sings through both. This is not a traditional “singing class” but an exploration of voice and a spontaneous discovery of song that is always there, waiting to be sung. The circle is a mixture of group work: vocal improv, chanting and toning; and voluntary solo work: song creation and spirit singing. Chants are taught by ear, without the use of printed words or music. It is for anyone with the urge–no matter how slight–to open their voice in song. As the African proverb says: If you can talk, you can sing!
